NEW Storm Project.

Pictures from Suffolk primary schools in our Storm Gallery

The young Benjamin Britten could see the North Sea from his attic bedroom window in Lowestoft and the impression it made upon him can be heard in his music. Just imagine how it would have looked and sounded on a dark and stormy night, with rain smashing against the window!

Watch a video of Suffolk artist James Mayhew illustrating the Storm Interlude from Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter Grimes, played by the BBC National Orchestra of Walesthen draw your own stormy picture and we’ll display it in our storm gallery.

CPD resources available for teachers

Benjamin Britten: A Lowestoft Childhood

This education booklet, researched and compiled by Ruth Wharrier, will provide a glimpse of the young Britten’s childhood and daily life in Lowestoft in the 1920’s. We hope the resources will be of great interest and use to teachers and educators working with KS1 and KS2 children. It includes our Britten as a boy walk, which can be walked in person or virtually. We hope it will encourage everyone to visit the young Ben’s beautiful coastal hometown of Lowestoft and walk in his childhood footsteps.

Benjamin Britten: A walk in his young footsteps

Take a walk in Ben’s childhood footsteps in this 360° virtual walk around his Lowestoft neighbourhood.
